Double Braided Bun

One of my favorite updos is a double braided bun. It looks very elegant, and also looks like you have A TON of hair, but it is sortof a long hair illusion :). I am posting this for my friend Jules (waving to Jules!). Sorry the pictures aren't the best. They were taken a few years ago with my old digital camera.

Here's how you do it....

Step 1: Pull front section of hair back and rope braid. Secure at the end with hair band.

Step 2: Wrap the rope braid into a bun, securing with hairpins as you wrap. If you don't secure with hairpins as you go, the bun won't stay well, and will eventually fall. I have had this happen before!

Step 3: Rope braid the remaining hair and secure with a hair band.

Step 4: Take the rope braid and wrap it around the bun. You may want to twist the braid at the base a bit before wrapping it around so there isn't a lump as you wrap. Secure with hairpins.

When finished wrapping around, tuck tail under bun, and finish securing with hairpins.

And here is what it looks like when it is done!

You can also dress it up with flowers. I used silk flowers for the updo when I renewed my wedding vows 6 years ago. It really dresses it up even more.

OOooOOoooOOOoooo! I remember that last picture and always wondered how you did it. I LOVE IT! It's just one of the prettiest updos ever. I'm going to see if I can give it a try this weekend if I have the time. Thank you for posting this Jen! :)

Oh wow, you make me want to grow my hair long again.
Back when I was in my early twenties I had hair almost as long and used to do something similiar. I always liked braiding my hair and wrapping it around my head like a hair band.
It looks lovely.
My daughter keeps telling me to "grow your hair LONG mommy" so now seeing this maybe I will.
Kelly
Since you have long hair do you know of any way to encourage growth faster????

Wow, thanks Jen. I'll try this. And thanks for the tips about pinning as you go - now I know why mine never stays upand looks all messy and floppy after half an hour. Your hair looks really long in these photos and as always, gorgeous.

Thanks so much for all of your very nice comments! April and Jules, I hope the instructions are clear enough so you can do the updo. And Kelly, if you want to grow your hair out go for it :). I definitely think long hair is fun, and there is so much that can be done with long hair!
